Spanish prefixes and suffixes
What are prefixes and suffixes in Spanish?
A prefix is placed before a base: des- + conectar produces desconectar. A suffix follows a base: feliz + -dad produces felicidad. Together they belong to the broader group called affixes.
Prefixes often modify direction, repetition, time, number or attitude. Suffixes commonly change word class or create names for qualities, actions, people and adjectives.
Treat an affix as a clue rather than a translation machine. Internacional is transparent, but a familiar-looking part can have several uses, and spelling or stress may change in the derived word.
Four safe rules for decoding words
Find a plausible base first, then identify the part added before or after it.
Check the whole word in a dictionary: the affix narrows the meaning but does not guarantee it.
Watch spelling and written accents. rápido becomes rápidamente, while feliz becomes felicidad.
Store one reliable example for each meaning. Do not assume every base accepts every productive affix.
