Spanish airport security phrases
Follow the flight, not an alphabetical word list
At check-in, name your destination and show the documents staff request. Facturar una maleta means to check a bag into the hold; equipaje de mano stays with you in the cabin, subject to your airline’s rules.
At security, ask before guessing what to do. A question such as ¿Tengo que sacar el portátil? means “Do I need to take out the laptop?” Follow the staff’s actual answer; screening procedures differ.
At the gate, distinguish la hora de embarque from la hora de salida. Boarding time and departure time are different. A gate number can change, so confirm it on the current display or with staff.
Listen for these short airport answers
Ventanilla o pasillo — window or aisle. A staff member may ask ¿Prefiere ventanilla o pasillo? Answer Pasillo, por favor.
Póngalo en la bandeja — put it in the tray. La bandeja is the security tray; el bolsillo is a pocket. Ask for repetition if you are unsure.
El vuelo está retrasado / cancelado — the flight is delayed / cancelled. Embarque por grupos means boarding by groups, not open boarding for everyone.
En la cinta número cinco — at belt number five. Recogida de equipajes is baggage claim; salida is the exit. Salidas on an airport sign usually means departures.

Two mini dialogues that test understanding
Passenger: ¿Ha cambiado la puerta de embarque? Staff: Sí, ahora es la B doce. Passenger: ¿La B doce? Gracias. Repeating the gate lets staff correct a misunderstanding.
Passenger: Mi maleta no ha llegado. Staff: ¿Tiene el resguardo del equipaje? Passenger: Sí, aquí tiene la etiqueta. The resguardo is the receipt or claim stub; the etiqueta is the tag.
Regional vocabulary: tarjeta de embarque and pase de abordar both mean boarding pass. In parts of Latin America you may hear documentar or despachar el equipaje where Spain commonly uses facturar. Billete and boleto refer to a ticket, which is not the same thing as a boarding pass.

A rehearsal that checks the reply
- Choose one stage and cover the translations. Say each question aloud.
- Have a partner answer with a gate, time, destination or baggage-belt number.
- Repeat the crucial detail back: ¿La puerta B doce?
- Change one detail and try again without reading.
- Keep the airline’s current instructions separate from your language notes.
Terminology checked against airport usage
Aena’s departure guidance confirms the terminology facturación, tarjeta de embarque, control de seguridad and embarque. The dialogues and translations are original learning examples.
