Spanish transition words
What are Spanish transition words?
Transition words and phrases—conectores—make the logical relationship between ideas explicit. They can add information, introduce contrast, explain a cause, show a result, order events or give an example.
Not every connector is interchangeable. Pero introduces a direct contrast; sin embargo links a new statement to the previous one and often carries commas; sino corrects a negative alternative.
Register matters. Y, pero, porque and por eso are natural in everyday speech. Asimismo and no obstante are more common in formal or written Spanish.
Choose the meaning before the connector
Addition: y, también and además extend an idea.
Contrast: pero, en cambio and sin embargo change direction.
Cause and result: porque gives a cause; por eso and por lo tanto give a result.
Sequence and explanation: primero, después, por ejemplo and es decir organise the message.

Take two short sentences and join them with one connector.
Say the relationship aloud before choosing: addition, contrast, cause, result, sequence or example.
Rewrite the same pair with a second connector and notice how the tone or logic changes.

What are the first Spanish transition words to learn?
Start with y, pero, porque, por eso, además, también, por ejemplo and finalmente. They cover the most common relationships.
What is the difference between pero and sino?
Pero contrasts two ideas. Sino corrects a negative alternative: No quiero té, sino café.
What is the difference between porque and por eso?

Do transition words need commas in Spanish?
Some often do when they organise a whole statement, such as sin embargo, por ejemplo and en resumen. Short conjunctions such as y, o and pero follow different punctuation patterns.
