Spanish adjective position: before or after the noun?

The safest beginner order is noun + adjective: una casa blanca, un coche eléctrico. Put an adjective before the noun when it evaluates, emphasises or frames the noun, and learn common pairs separately because position can change meaning: un gran hombre is an admirable man, while un hombre grande is a large man.

Spanish adjective position

Where do adjectives go in Spanish?

At A1–A2, use the post-noun pattern by default. It identifies or restricts the noun: camisa roja selects a red shirt, and energía solar names a type of energy.

A qualifying adjective may move before the noun to express the speaker’s evaluation, emphasis or an expected quality: una excelente idea, un maravilloso día. This order is not a mechanical translation of English.

Some frequent adjectives change meaning by position. Learn the whole pair, not an isolated word: viejo amigo means long-time friend, but amigo viejo describes the friend’s age.

Four decisions cover most beginner cases

Use noun + adjective for colour, shape, nationality, material, purpose and other identifying information.

Use adjective + noun for evaluation, emphasis, quantity-like meaning or an epithet, but check whether the phrase is conventional.

Memorise meaning-changing pairs such as gran/grande, viejo, pobre, simple, nuevo and cierto as complete phrases.

Before a masculine singular noun, bueno, malo, grande, primero and tercero normally shorten to buen, mal, gran, primer and tercer.

Busco una camisa roja. · Vivimos en una casa pequeña. · Compró un coche eléctrico. · Es una decisión política. · Necesito agua fría. · Tienen una mesa redonda. · Estudia literatura española. · Visitamos el museo nacional.

Fue un maravilloso día. · Admiramos la blanca nieve. · Es una excelente idea. · Recibimos una triste noticia. · Fue una difícil decisión. · Hizo un enorme esfuerzo. · Tengo una buena razón. · Fue el primer intento.

Position changes meaning

Learn both orders as separate phrases instead of translating one adjective.

Es un gran hombre. · Es un hombre grande. · Es una vieja amiga. · Es una amiga vieja. · Es un pobre niño. · Es un niño pobre. · Es una simple pregunta. · Es una pregunta simple. · Tengo un nuevo teléfono. · Tengo un teléfono nuevo. · Recibimos cierta información. · Recibimos información cierta.

Fixed and shortened forms

Keep relational adjectives after the noun and apply apocope or ordinal order before it.

Es una médica argentina. · Analizamos energía solar. · Es un buen libro. · Vive en el tercer piso.

How can a beginner choose the position?

Ask whether the adjective identifies which kind of thing you mean. If yes, place it after the noun: coche eléctrico, médica argentina, energía solar.

If it expresses your evaluation or presents the quality as expected, before-noun position may be natural: excelente idea, blanca nieve. When unsure, the neutral post-noun order is safer.

For gran/grande, viejo, pobre, simple, nuevo and cierto, compare the intended meaning with a learned pair before writing.

FAQ

Do Spanish adjectives usually go before or after the noun?

Most descriptive and identifying adjectives follow the noun. Before-noun position is available for emphasis, evaluation and some conventional meanings.

Does adjective position always change the meaning?

No. Sometimes it changes emphasis or style, sometimes it changes meaning, and some adjectives have a preferred or fixed position.

What is the difference between gran and grande?

Gran before a singular noun often means great or important; grande after a noun normally means large. Grande shortens to gran before a singular noun.

Why is it un buen libro, not un bueno libro?

Bueno shortens to buen before a masculine singular noun. It keeps bueno after the noun: un libro bueno.

Can nationality adjectives go before the noun?

They normally follow the noun because they classify it: una médica argentina, literatura española. Fronting them requires a special context or style.

Can Hola Cards choose adjective order automatically?

No. It helps you import and practise these fixed examples; the guide and primary references explain the choice.
