Spanish banking vocabulary

What banking words should a Spanish beginner learn?

Start with what you can see: el banco, la sucursal, la ventanilla and el cajero automático. Then add the nouns that identify an account and its activity.

Learn actions with their objects: abrir una cuenta, consultar el saldo, retirar efectivo, pagar una factura and hacer una transferencia. This makes each word usable rather than isolated.

Expect regional alternatives. Ingresar and depositar can both mean to deposit money; retirar and sacar both appear for withdrawals. Extracto bancario and estado de cuenta describe an account statement in different regions.

Four patterns that make banking vocabulary useful

Keep the article with each noun: la cuenta, el saldo, la tarjeta and la comisión.

Use hacer with operations: hacer una transferencia and hacer un ingreso.

Use consultar for information: consultar el saldo and consultar los movimientos.

Never say confidential numbers aloud unless you have independently verified who is asking and why.
