Why numbers and time should be early Spanish

A beginner can avoid many rare nouns, but you cannot avoid numbers. You need them for prices, room numbers, platform numbers, dates, ages, phone numbers, and times.

Dates and time words also make other guides more useful. ¿Cuánto cuesta? needs numbers. ¿A qué hora es? needs time. Travel, restaurants, and shopping all become easier when numbers are automatic.

Simple rule: learn numbers inside real time situations

Do not study numbers as a long chant only. Pair them with short, useful phrases: Son las dos, el lunes, en enero, hoy, mañana, and ¿Qué hora es?

For a first pass, learn 0-20, the tens, 100, 1000, the days of the week, the months, and the small clock phrases that turn numbers into real plans.

Quick answers about Spanish numbers, dates, and time

The basic Spanish numbers for beginners are cero, uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez, and then once to veinte before the tens.

Spanish days and months are usually written lowercase: lunes, martes, enero, febrero. Use el lunes for “on Monday” and en enero for “in January”.

To ask the time, say ¿Qué hora es? For one o’clock use Es la una; for other hours use Son las dos, Son las tres, and so on.

  1. Start with 0-20, then add the tens and only then add dates and clock phrases.
  2. Say the number out loud before reading the translation.
  3. Write short examples from memory: lunes, enero, Son las dos, and Son las tres y media.
  4. Make separate mini-groups if one area is weak: numbers, weekdays, months, or clock time.
