Spanish hobbies vocabulary

How do you talk about hobbies in Spanish?

Ask ¿Qué te gusta hacer en tu tiempo libre? or ¿Cuáles son tus aficiones? Answer with Me gusta + infinitive: Me gusta leer; Me encanta bailar. Because the activity is an infinitive, use gusta, not gustan.

Afición and hobby name the interest; pasatiempo often means a pastime. In everyday conversation, a complete activity phrase is usually more useful than a label: hago senderismo, toco la guitarra, juego al ajedrez.

Keep the verb with the noun. Use tocar + instrument, jugar a + game or sport, hacer + activity, and ir a/de + outing: tocar el piano, jugar al tenis, hacer yoga, ir al cine, ir de camping.

Five patterns that cover most hobbies

Me gusta + infinitive: Me gusta leer; Nos gusta viajar.

Tocar + instrument: tocar la guitarra, tocar el piano.

Jugar a + game or sport: jugar al ajedrez, jugar al fútbol.

Hacer + activity: hacer yoga, hacer senderismo, hacer fotografías.

Ir a or ir de + outing: ir al cine, ir a conciertos, ir de camping.

How to make a natural sentence

Use Me gusta + infinitive for a general preference: Me gusta cocinar. Use a conjugated verb for a real routine: Cocino los fines de semana.

For a noun, gustar agrees with the noun: Me gusta la fotografía; Me gustan los videojuegos. For an activity infinitive, singular gusta is standard: Me gusta jugar a videojuegos.

Regional wording varies. Hacer fotografías and sacar/tomar fotos are all understood; ir de camping and ir de acampada vary by region. Learn one neutral form first, then recognise the alternatives.
