Spanish adverbs of manner

What are adverbs of manner in Spanish?

An adverb of manner describes the way an action is performed. In Corre rápido, rápido modifies corre; it does not describe a noun.

Spanish uses simple adverbs such as bien and mal, adjective-shaped forms such as rápido and fuerte, adverbs ending in -mente, and phrases such as con cuidado or en silencio.

Meaning and register matter. Despacio and lentamente can both mean “slowly”, but the shorter form is especially common in everyday instructions. A fixed phrase may sound more natural than a long -mente form.

How to form adverbs ending in -mente

Use the feminine singular form of the adjective and add -mente: claro → clara → claramente; cuidadoso → cuidadosa → cuidadosamente.

Keep the written accent of the adjective: rápido → rápidamente; fácil → fácilmente. The RAE treats these forms as having two stresses.

When two -mente adverbs are coordinated, Spanish commonly keeps the suffix only on the last one: clara y rápidamente.

Do not add -mente mechanically to every adjective. Check real usage, and remember that rápido, lento and fuerte can work as invariant adverbial forms in common contexts.
