sports in Spanish

How do you name and use sports in Spanish?

Learn a sport with its article: el fútbol, la natación, el atletismo. This makes the noun easier to recognise in a complete sentence.

Use jugar a for games, usually with a + el contracted to al: Juego al fútbol; jugamos al tenis. The article stays feminine in juego a la pelota, though that phrase names a ball game rather than a single sport.

Use hacer for an activity you do and practicar as a flexible, slightly more formal choice: hago gimnasia; practico judo. Usage varies, so remember one common phrase with each sport.

Three verb patterns that cover most sports

Jugar a + article is common with ball, team, racket and board games: jugar al fútbol, al tenis, al hockey.

Hacer + sport is common for physical activities: hacer gimnasia, esquí, senderismo or surf.

Practicar + sport works broadly when you mean training in or taking part in a sport: practicar natación, judo or atletismo.

Ask ¿Qué deporte practicas? and answer Practico…; ask ¿Juegas al…? when the sport normally takes jugar.
