Spanish x pronunciation
How is X pronounced in Spanish?
Use /ks/ between vowels or at the end of many words: examen, taxi, éxito, relax. In careful speech, keep both parts audible without inserting a vowel between them.
Before another consonant, standard pronunciation also allows /ks/: texto and explicar. In ordinary speech—especially in Spain—the cluster is often simplified toward /s/. Both careful /ks/ and common reduced /s/ are useful to recognize.
At the beginning of many words of Greek or technical origin, x is normally pronounced /s/: xilófono, xenón, xerografía. Historic spellings such as México, Oaxaca, Texas, and Ximena are the exception: their x has the sound of Spanish j, written /x/ in broad IPA.
Choose the sound from position and history
Between vowels or word-final: start with /ks/—examen, éxito, boxeo, clímax.
Before a consonant: careful /ks/ is standard, while a reduced /s/ is common in everyday speech—texto, experiencia.
Word-initial in many learned terms: use /s/—xilófono, xenofobia, xilema.
Historic names: pronounce x like Spanish j—México, mexicano, Oaxaca, Texas, texano, Ximena. Do not generalize this rule to every initial x.

Build the sound into a complete word
For /ks/, say the preceding vowel, close briefly for k, then release directly into s: e-k-sa-men. Do not add an extra vowel.
Alternate texto with taxi. Recognize that x before a consonant may be lighter in conversation, while intervocalic x normally keeps the two-part /ks/ target.
Group initial words such as xilófono together so /s/ becomes automatic, then keep historic names in a separate group.
