Spanish art vocabulary
Which art words should a Spanish beginner learn first?
Begin with the broad nouns el arte and la obra, then learn the materials you can point to: el papel, el lápiz, el pincel and el lienzo. Spanish nouns are easier to remember when you keep the article attached.
Several words have more than one useful meaning. La pintura can mean paint or painting; el dibujo is a drawing, while dibujar means to draw. Context tells you which sense is intended.
The examples below are short descriptions, not rules about artistic quality. They help you reuse each word in a complete Spanish sentence.
Three useful patterns for talking about art
Use pintar for applying paint and dibujar for making a drawing: Pinto con acuarela; Dibujo una figura.
Describe what a work contains with tener or mostrar: La obra tiene líneas curvas; El cuadro muestra una plaza.
Keep noun gender with the article: el lienzo, la paleta, los colores. Learn the pair, not just the noun.
